Reality Bites
Mood:  chatty
Now Playing: Senses Working Overtime-XTC on XRT
Got a blessed day off today. Baboo had a show a couple of hours away, and was gone for the bulk of the day. He has the same itinerary for tomorrow, while I start work just about the time he gets done.
I all of a sudden have about as much work as I can handle, and will be creating mandalas until about the end of September at this rate. I really need to average $300 each to be able to support myself, and be doing like 6 a month. Right now I could seriously have 12 of them lined up, and I think I do. I have one in the works, for an April 27th Aries. I have one for July 17, one is July 21, TWO on June 20-one is a bday, one is an anniversary (they are a little behind) I have a family one for Brian and one for Lisa, one for my Aunt Kathe. One, possibly two or a double for one of Carol's friends. I am not having a hard time selling my product. I need time to produce it.
I am thankful that I get to create these pieces for people. I think that it is something that I was meant to do, to treat people like they are special. The thing that I like to impart to people, is that they are one of a kind, and that they have something to contribute. I have a lot of examples of what it is we do for one another, and that we can really make a difference by being a light for others to follow.

You don't ever know...Baboo's best friend's wife just lost a very short bout with ovarian cancer. A month or two ago she was diagnosed from an abnormal pap smear-You can't really detect ovarian cancer before it's pretty advanced, but she caught it pretty early anyway. They did surgery, and got it out. She was very healthy otherwise, and the surgery went well. She had her first chemo, and really got sick quickly.
Tonight, after a couple of days of a pretty comatose state, she was lucid enough to agree to letting go. They made her comfortable, we all gathered around and said gooodbye, and sang her to sleep. It all happened so fast, that it hardly seems real.
Tom and Carol have been together for about 20 years. They had just tied the knot about two years ago this fall. They both have good jobs, and no kids. They would take those exotic sounding vacations that you think about when you read National Geographic. Take six weeks in January to scuba dive in New Zealand. Go to Baja where the whales winter, and kayak among them. Go to the Galapagos, then trek through South America for a month or so...They were perfect for each other, and he is going to miss her more than I can imagine.
God Bless You, and Keep You...Feel your Love.

Robyn's Birthday

Topic: 1/2 way mark
It's my little sister's birthday, and my half birthday today. For those of you who are new at this, we were both born on the days that most coupons and special offers expire!!! I'm not sure what that means in the grand scheme...I'll keep you updated as I get word.
As for the tale of tour...step into my wayback machine-begin twirling-and come out on June 30, 1995. We were in Indiana, at Deer Creek Music Theater. It was hot, and the show was sold out (it's a sweet venue). Showtime came, and there was still quite a crowd outside looking to get in. The music started, and a wave of inspiration came over a large collection of people who started running for the fences, and tore the wall between in, and out, down!!! BRILLIANT MISTAKE!!!
I was one of the people on the outside, but I know that when I am supposed to be in a show, I get a ticket, and if I don't get a ticket, I am just supposed to kick it on the lot with the rest of the "family". Both sides have their merits. I, watched in amazement from the other side of the lot as the show was rudely interupted by people with no respect for the Dead. Or our way of life.
Micro-chasm/Macro-chasm.

Days Between
Mood:  spacey
Now Playing: Althea-GratefulDead
Topic: More Tour
Back to the last summer Dead tour saga...So, after having a fantastic run at the Palace, I set off for Deer Creek, outside of Indianapolis for what was supposed to be two shows. Again, I was setting off with no tickets, and very little cash, but no worries. This was a day between shows, just travel...tomorrow, more tour.
As for the present day, seems like a day between here too. Spent the day with my friend Fleesh, and Tyrone's bitch, Ruby. Gave her a PHAT hairwrap for her birthday, in preparation for her weekend at the Gorge in George,WA (curiouser and curiouser!!!)seeing Widespread Panic. I'm saving my pennies for String Cheese at Horning's Hideout for Baboo's Birthday next month. Something tells me I will have plenty of hairwrap biz when folks get a load of the one I did today!!!
Beginning to wean the Casa de Quesadilla from their dependence on me. I think I even know who my replacement should be, but I don't know if they will take me seriously. I will get them through training of another shift co, and will probably be available to do it too for a while, but my priority is to my Mandalas...when you gotta go...I am aiming for the end of the year...guess we'll see.

Flashback 1995
Mood:  hug me
Now Playing: Lucy in the Sky-Encore from the Palace-June 28,1995
Topic: Everyday Miracles
On June 27, 1995, I woke up after my conversation with Tomaro and made my way to the Palace (at Auburn Hills, MI) I had some hats to sell, and planned to do some hairwraps. I was looking to hook up with some friends that I had met on spring tour, and I was hoping to see the show, but didn't have a ticket:( (I learned from Pandora, and I did have HOPE!)
I didn't make a whole lot of money, and the prospect of getting a ticket fell on the kindness of strangers-(which is everywhere on the lot.) A couple of hours before the show I wrapped my index finger in a $10 bill and held it over my head. I started into my "pitch" for an "extra"..."who's gonna get the Princess into the Palace, CASH for your EXTRA!!! Lo, and behold, a "local" stopped me and said he had an extra ticket. I explained to him that I could only spare $10 for it. He said OK!!!
We sat in the back of his pickup, and he offered me a beer. As we started talking, he handed a guy a camera to take our picture. He hadn't even asked, and I said-"I won't show up on your film!" and when the guy went to shoot the photo, THE CAMERA WOULDN'T WORK!!! Tour MAGIC!
We went into the show, and the magic began. I was surrounded by swirling light, colors, and sound. The crowd twirled and sang along...Mississippi 1/2 Step, Loser, I forget now, doesn't matter, I was in.
During the show (haha Sugaree just came on WXRT...)I found out that the guy who gave me the ticket's last name was Billette-I laughed because in French BILLET is TICKET!!!(please, forget you knew my name...) I had to laugh-MORE tour MAGIC!!! He treated me well, bought me a rose, and I had to tell him that a $10 ticket was just that, and that he had not bought a date. He backed off, and we just shared the rest of the show. He was really a gentleman, and I ended up staying at his house (AND NOT SLEEPING WITH HIM!).
The next morning (the 28th)he got up and got ready for work. He fixed breakfast, and I read his Tarot cards. I told him as he walked out the door that he was going to have a really easy day at work because he was taking such good care of "the Princess". He let me stay at his place until I was ready to go to the lot.
A short while after he left, he called, and I heard him on the machine telling me to pick up the phone. Apparently, he walked into work, and as he opened the door, the electricity went out! He came back to his house and brought me lunch. When he went back to work in the afternoon, he called again to say that he had a ticket for me for that night's show. A Miracle!! I met him on the lot for the second, and what was to be the last time I officially saw Jerry and the boys together...TEN YEARS AGO TONIGHT...
such a long, long time to be gone, and a short time to be there

-Sweet-I'll take that as a DEAD-ication!!! Thank You, Jerry.
Ten years ago tonight I was at my second to last Dead show (inside) at The Palace at Auburn Hills. It was quite a special show. I was there all by myself. I had taken off in my truck with the capper on the back, and my couch bed mattress in it. A rig that had earned the title "the together-ment" (as opposed to the apart-ment-lol) when we were on spring tour. (see photo)
I met a guy the night before the show who helped me get a camping space. His name was Gary Tomaro (like "tomorrow") and he was from San Francisco. I was involved in what had become a sort of cosmic game of chess, looking to put a certain king in check. This was like a sign that my plan was working, but then that's a horse of a different color! Gary Tomaro and I hung out in the togetherment and swapped tour stories until it was gettting light out. All the next day I thought to myself "Last night I talked to Tomaro until dawn!!!"
Now I can say "ten years ago I talked with Tomaro until Dawn-and I am just beginning to be able to understand all that was said!"
to be continued....

Saturn, Mercury and Venus
Mood:  special
Now Playing: Grateful Dead Hour-WXRT-Chicago
This weekend there is a conjunction between Saturn,(the planet of Truth and restriction-KARMA), Mercury,(travel and communication) and Venus (love and beauty). A conjunction is a harmonious aspect where the planets are within 10 degrees of each other. A chart has 360 degrees (it's a circle!) broken into 12 "houses" which are about 30 degrees each (You do remember MATH don't you? It's the foundation!)
This aspect is highlighting the places in our life where we communicate truth in our relationships. We are in the sun sign of Cancer, the house of HOME, and the full moon we just had was in Capricorn, the house of Career and Public Standing. The new moon on the 6th of July will be in Cancer, and the second full moon during the sun's transit of Cancer will be in Capricorn as well!!! It is RARE that there are two full moons during one sun transit. It is also RARE that both of them will be in the same sign (CAPRICORN).
This is the time where we should really be crafting our futures. This is the time to communicate what we want in relationships of ALL kinds, WORK and HOME. We should be setting ourselves up for success and balance in these two areas. We should be honoring both as well. If we don't create a firm foundation right now, Saturn will find a way to kick our asses to the curb, and see if we can pick ourselves up again!!! (ask me how I know!)
Meanwhile, there is what is known as a quincunx aspect to Pluto and these three powerhouses. Pluto is the planet of Birth, Death, and Regeneration. It rules Scorpio, one of the most mystical signs of the zodiac. (They know who they are, and usually who you are too!!!) A quincunx aspect is 150 degreees from the other planets, and is a strange kind of energy. While you are planning your Home/Work balance, Pluto is looking for the weakness in your plan, so BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR!!! You can have it all, as long as you are working for the greater good.
Changes and decisions made now are LONG term. May the force be with you!!!

Had to undergo scrutiny at Juan's Waterin' Hole. The Honcho's from P-town come down and put their business in ours once a quarter, and I get to be the one who comes in and closes for the rest of them (small price to pay considering the rest of the managers have to be there for the full 10-12 hours of the inspection) It interferes with my precious pre-Saturday Market prepping and sleep, but they don't really think that's any big deal. I will get by. I can't miss market, especially since I was sick last week and am behind another PRECIOUS point.

Full Moon Fever
Mood:  on fire
Now Playing: Wolfman's Brother -PHISH
Topic: Yowl....
The full moon is in Capricorn tonight. The sun is in Cancer. For me-a Capricorn sun sign with a Cancer rising, and Cancer being ruled by the moon, this is very powerful. Capricorn is the 10th house of the zodiac, the house of Career and Public Standing, while Cancer is the 4th house-the house of Home Life. This is a dichotomy, and probably a large part of the reason that I am working on running a business out of my house!!!
This configuration affects everyone in the areas of home and career. The full moon highlights the ways we need to balance the two. In my case tomorrow I am delivering my first double mandala to a couple in a new geographic and economic region for me, but first I had to put in one of the longest, and most troublesome shifts to date at Pedro's Poquito Poblano-ria.
Yes, kids, combine one part full moon, one dining room full of kids eat free, and one bar-load of .99 cent fish tacos. Add one sunshiney day to open the patio with an extra ten tables as far from the kitchen as possible, take away one bar server, move one dining room server (inexperienced of course!)to compensate. Now take away one hostess (from two scheduled) who "didn't realize that she was scheduled" and leave one hostess who has been there for about three weeks. Then have one of the precious four remaining dining room servers (for the 5 dining rooms in the building) ALSO not show for her shift. Throw into the mix one expediter who is usually a bartender, for the vacationing veteran food grabber and two cooks to cook food for orders coming from the entire place. Did I mention that in a effort to save labor dollars the second bartender was scheduled an hour later than he has been coming in for 10 years (swift!) and top it off with a "shift coordinator"(moi!) who works one shift a week. Throw it in a blender for 6 hours and you will have yourself A NIGHT FROM HELL!!!
I am proud of the fact that I, nor any one of my (skeleton) crew ran screaming from the building swearing never to return. I am proud that everyone kept a level head and just kept going. I AM seeing the message for me here. I make more money on monday day shifts behind the bar, than being the "head honcha" of the entire place, and one custom mandala is worth TWICE what I made tonight. Tell me where would YOU focus your energies?...
