Islamic New Year

Happy New Year-It is the Islamic New Year today. I wish for there this to be the year that respect and hope for a better future wins over intolerance and hope for annihilation. Many changes are possible with the powerful Pluto aspect coming up starting the 4th (Saturday)-through the end of our calender year (Dec. 28 when it conjuncts Galactic Center). Pluto being the planet of the Phoenix-it is possible at any point to rise from the ashes, and begin again. Sit for a moment and picture this year in the middle east as a lush, desert oasis. People are draped in colorful silk and enjoying good food and conversation. There is plenty to go around and the fire is no longer fueled by the pressure of the free world to produce more and more oil, since Americans have reduced their need for both gasoline and Adkins by slowing down, and enjoying life instead of racing around looking for the biggest bargain in town on things they didn't even know they needed!!!! (That goes for me too!!! I'm no Saint-I just play one on t.v.) If you ask me about the rising gas prices, I say-GOOD! It's not that I want to see the rich getting richer (want to buy some art?), by pricing the little guy out of existence. I want to see the little guy think hard about what he is supporting when he fills up the tank on his S.U.V. (so he can feel like one of the big guys). I want us to respect oil as a precious and finite resource, so that maybe we will finally get serious about finding an alternative before we have no future to plan for. One of the nice things about working from my home is that I don't have to drive there. It's a small step, but one I've resolved to build on this year. I live in a city where it is possible to get to most of the places that I go as fast, or sometimes faster on a bike-plus that will help compensate for the fact that I am not running (literally!) around getting other people their food for 6 hours a day. I'm gonna be a little bit of a weenie on that last part for a little while while it is still MONSOON season in the Pacific Northwest, but I'll try to make up for it in other ways for now...Paper or Plastic? Just say NO.

Tomorrow is my last day at the Bombdiggity Burrito. WOW!! I thought I would be so nervous, but I can only feel R-E-L-I-E-F (not to be confused with R-O-L-A-I-D-S). I can do this. It is also the Chinese New Year-the year of the Fire Dog. The Dog is faithful and from the heart. I am a Dragon, and the Dog is my polar opposite sign, which is supposed to be my most difficult to deal with. I however believe that it is time that enemies lay down their arms and learn to co-exist, so I am looking forward to the challenges of the dog year as a chance to work for PEACE. Monday is the Islamic New Year at sundown, and Tuesday is their New Year's Day, Wednesday, Carnival begins, Thursday is Groundhog Day (one of my FAVORITES) and Friday-IS JUST FRIDAY. I feel like this is the world's week of celebration of me finally taking a LEAP OF FAITH!!! LET'S DANCE!!!

ONE YEAR BLOGIVERSARY!!!

Woke up, got outta bed...(not necessarily in that order), dragged a couple of teenaged boys to school, thought about the tasks of the day, contemplated getting back in bed. I haven't got a routine in place yet, and I am really kind of all over the clock with my sleeping right now. Like I said, I am nesting, and trying to tie up the loose ends of old projects before I really get started with new ones. I am really excited to start the new ones, so the sooner I get the grunt work done...UGH. It's all about the business end of the creative work this time of year-doing taxes, writing my business plan for the year, cash-flow projections-Just because I am an artist, doesn't mean I don't have to do number crunching. As a matter of fact, NOT doing it is what makes it difficult for most artists to survive. (This is where having been the manager of two national chain restaurants serves me well.) I guess I just have to look at it as it's own creative endeavor- 1.)taxes-can I deduct the cost of nail polish-for my bi-annual toe polishing? It's paint after all! 2.)cash-flow projections-this is creative writing at it's finest. (Visualize Black Ink!) 3.)Business Plan-make art, sell art, make money, make more art!!! That wasn't so hard-the creative part is making that take up 37 or so pages to make the bank folks think I deserve my grant. (okay-so it's a small price to pay for $4000) It all goes back to a piece of art work that I made in 1993. It say's "How to be an Artist in 3 easy steps... 1.)forget money exists (see no evil) 2.)listen to your inner voice (hear no evil) 3.)SHUT UP AND WORK!!! (speak no evil) On that note-HAPPY BLOGIVERSARY!!! Thank you to my faithful readership (you know who you are!) Feel free to share your thoughts (just click on "post your comment" at the bottom of each entry...) and especially your DREAMS...They are the stuff that LIFE is made of!!! May this next year be greater than the last! (ooh, the sun just came out...let the day begin!)

Had to stretch to figure out the theme of the day. I looked to the calender for inspiration, and WHOA!!!! Whip out some Foster's and throw some shrimp on the barbie-me and my Aussie Cattle Dog Tyrone are celebrating AUSTRALIA DAY!!! I don't feel Down or Under-LET'S PLAY! As for this day under the stars, the moon was void of course for half of the day-this is not the best placement for getting things done, good thing I slept through most of it! In the afternoon when it moved forward in Capricorn, I came upon a mad bargain completely at random, and found these WONDERFUL purses that I can finish with my Faeries and sell for a tidy profit!!! This is a truly Capricorn feat. Thanks Luna! Yesterday-which I consider my first day of freedom from the "Flatulent Frijole", I was nesting like an expectant mother. I rearranged my office space into a more efficient configuration (why didn't I think of this before?!) and managed to fit my drawing table into it too-freeing up space in my studio to store my supplies more efficiently!! I also managed to finish another card prototype, and clean up spiderwebs and baseboards all around the central living area!!! Pass the bon-bons, I think it's time for Oprah.

The Horse Story... In the summers during high school, my sisters and I got to stay at our grandparent's in Wisconsin. It was a beautiful little resort town and we lived just up the highway from a beautiful little resort-Lake Lawn Lodge. There was a stables there and an old friend of my grandfather's ran it with his daughter and son-in-law. There were about 32 trail horses, and guests of the resort would get a 45 minute ride for about $7. To me, that was a small fortune. Lucky for me, the people who ran the stables let me stay there and hang around the horses and me and one of my friends would spend all day (7am-6pm) saddling, feeding, brushing, petting, getting the horses out for the guests to ride, and putting them back when they were done. At some point in the afternoon, we would get to go out on one of the trail rides. That was our pay. It was all I wanted. Work was play. My favorite horse was this ornery old paint named Hombre. This last year, a friend of mine and I were looking at my astrological chart. I have my sun in Capricorn-the house of public standing, but I have 4 planets in my 5th house right next door-in Sagittarius (the Centaur)-the house of learning and philosophy in the position of creativity (and sex). She told me that in order to get to the point where I make my work play (and stop trudging around on the burro-at the little bull)I had to get that Capricorn sun to jump the fence and join the happy-go-lucky Sagittarian horses. Well, imagine how happy I was yesterday, to see on the FRONT PAGE of the local newspaper, on my last real work day, a line of 5 horses-1 brown, one paint, and then three more brown, parading across the page!!! The caption above the photo said "GIDDYUP AND AWAY!!!". The paint was doing this little bucking bronco move, and it looked so playful-I knew this was my Capricorn horse, making a break for it!!! Why, yes, if this was anyone else's life, I would say "that's just crazy!!!" but since it is the way things work in my life all of the time, I just giggle at the cosmic commedians, and say "GOOD ONE!!!" ;) THANKS!

The last three days blended into a blur as I worked my last few days at the Fiesta Fandango. I was going to write an update yesterday, but I was so tired-it feels as though years of tension from carrying trays and making sure people are fed and watered in a personable and friendly atmosphere are falling away, and I need extra sleep to heal myself. Of course, I am not getting extra sleep-I still have the kids, and I am trying to tie up loose ends with my grant and a few projects I have going, and I am excited, soooo...sleep has been short and sweet, and I am having the most amazing dreams when I do get to rest, that I feel like I am on the go 24/7!!! My last official day is Sunday (the Chinese New Year and the New Moon), but since it is brunch, and people get their own food, and I am only there to keep their champaigne glasses full, it doesn't seem like a work day at all. Plus, since my regulars know that it is my last day, many of them are coming in and are going to celebrate with me all day-it feels more like a farewell party. Today was really my last official "work day" in my mind, because I have the next four days off. Can I just say, that I have been BEAMING!!! Last night, I had a dream where I was talking to a group of people, and I was saying "I am here to show you what is possible" there was a lot of dialogue and I kept picking up references to the Pyramids, not only the Egyptian ones-we were all very light hearted. I got up to give my demonstration and I began to levitate, and then I floated around the room and did flips and summersaults in midair(with NO STUNT DOUBLE, mind you!!!) and I knew when I woke up that it was my spirit at play. I can't tell you how difficult it was to get ready for work with the tears of joy welling up in my eyes every time I tried to put on my mascara!!! Tomorrow, I will tell you about the pony magic that happened today-but I gotta get some sleep. LIVE YOUR DREAMS, KIDS!!! IT IS POSSIBLE!

FLASHBACK...1978-Flipside Records, Hoffman Estates, Illinois. My best friend and I, having perfected the art of the curling iron, and sporting the requisite hair flip and matching blue silk jackets with white sleeves, hike from my parents suburban apartment to see the teen hearthrob du jour-LEIF GARRETT (that's LAYF-not LEAF!!!). SSSWOOOOOONNNNNNN.... We approach the record store and it is brimming with squealing fans loooking to get a glimpse at the sleepy eyed, feathered haired, blonde California boy we watched in movies, plastered on our bedroom walls, and heard on records (or 8-tracks...). Oh, we immediately knew we weren't going to get close to him by trying to get into the store through this mob!!! But we are not just ordinary screaming girlies, we are cunning and clever. We sneak around to the back of the strip mall to find a much smaller crowd giggling next to LEIF'S LIMOSINE!!! (Almost Famous Style!) Teenaged Girl Heaven!!! We waited out there until he actually came out, and while he didn't stop to sign autographs or anything, WE got to see him up close and personal-which is more than I can say for most of the girls who couldn't get close enough to look into the front window!!! Aren't we cute! FLASHFORWARD, 2006, Imagine my disappointment when I saw a bruised and battered mug shot of my teen idol flash onto the t.v. screen yesterday. Yes Folks, another one bites the dust. Old Leif. Balding. Scraped. Looking for all the world like the guys standing next to the stoplights with their cardboard signs saying "need $.57" or "it's 4:19". Sad. ARRESTED The story goes, he was caught for trying to jump onto the train without a token, and their search turned up heroin. Nice. Another child star becomes an adult statistic. I don't think this is the comeback he was hoping for. It certainly isn't the way I thought his life would turn out! (Might have been different if he had hung out with me and my best friend for a while!!!) Makes me glad that for me (and my gal pal too...you know who you are!) THE BEST IS YET TO COME!!!

Today is another day where I have two birthdays to celebrate-My friends Mary and Toni are both celebrating their birthdays on the day that the sun moves from Capricorn into Aquarius-hence CapAquarians!!! The starsign Aquarius is known to be UNIQUE. I tease my friends (and son) who are Aquarian, that they are confused because they are the "Waterbearer" but they are Air signs! This gets especially confusing for the ones here on the cusp of Capricorn, which is Earth-YIKES! Aquarius rules the ankles, and the electrical impulses of the body. It's planet is Uranus (go ahead-get the giggle out of the way...) which is the planet of science and alchemy. It is the planet of the unexpected and magic. Aquarian natives are naturally tuned into the bigger picture and as they progress, they worry less and less about what people think of their "quirks". Aquarians love to socialize-it's a learning experience, but many of them do not feel like they truly fit in. It can be difficult for others to feel like they understand them as well, and on some level... Aquarius loves it that way! (MYSTERY!) It's January 18th. Not only is it my 7 year anniversary at Pedro's Presidential Palace, it is the birthdate of not one, but TWO of my ex-boyfriends!!! I wouldn't mention it, except that there is a strange twist that gives me a giggle, and I think it will do the same for you... One of the boys is a guy I have known since he worked in the kitchen of the restaurant I managed during and after college. I don't usually like to mention the full names of people without their consent, but his is so cool I just have to share it with you-it's Gannon Ray!!! (if you know him-tell him I said HI!) When we were seeing each other, I called him my "Myster-Ray" and then he became my "Ex-Ray" (because I saw right through him-LOL-JK ;)) He was born in Oregon, but now lives in Illinois. I tell you this because the first guy I dated when I moved HERE three years later, shared his birthdate, and was born in Illinois and lives in Oregon!!! WHAT ARE THE CHANCES??? (I mean if you are not me...cuz in my life, it is par for the course in case you haven't been paying attention!) Who wouldn't love to have a life so full of fun!!! Thank You, Great Amoeba!!! (p.s. the official countdown is 10 days-and only 5 of them are work days!!! OOOHHHHHHH-FREEDOM-I can taste it!!!)
