The Three R's
Mood:  quizzical
Now Playing: Michelle-the Beatles
Topic: Rick Rack
Random reality requires a check, once in a while. I was made aware of a phenomenon that happens every so often at the Restaurante Ranchera. The cornerstone of our bar is a man named Rick (You know who you are!) Last nite he was joined by a couple of friends, Rick, and Rick. Tonite, he was flanked by another Rick and YES, ANOTHER RICK!!! (somehow these three all spell Rick a different way, but I'm not sure how exactly that is sooooo...)
This is a microchasm of my macrochasm...my neighborhood. Here where I live there is some sort of stutter or something. When I met my honey-Roger, his roommate was Michelle-when I moved in here, there were two of us under one roof. Also a block away, same house #-is another Michelle (we get her mail!) Across the street live Karen and Ray, next to them live Karen and Raynold!! Next to us is a guy named Rick. Next to him...you guessed it-ANOTHER RICK!!! So we have Michelle, Michelle, Michelle, Karen, Karen. Ray, Raynold, Rick, Rick, and Roger. Are you sensing a pattern here?
I am living proof that God made me just for the Mic-HELL-e of it. These stories are proof that the universe TRULY has a strange sense of humor.
(Special Thanks [a shout out!] to our cornerstone for bringing this to my attention this evening!)

Happy Birthday to My Dad
Mood:  celebratory
Now Playing: Plastic Jesus-Jim Davis and Frank Webner
Topic: My OLD Man
It's my Daddy-o's 60th Birthday!!! It is also his youngest sister's oldest son's 25th birthday!!! So Happy Birthday Jim and Willie!! While I'm on the subject-my best friend's Son turned 20 yesterday, and her daughter had a baby last Friday (On the day after my Grandma's funeral-in the same town!! Such is the cycle of life.) This month has been intense, but we have already had the discussion about the eclipses-especially the lunar one on Sunday that was in Scorpio-the house of Birth, Death and Regeneration. I guess you could say that one hit pretty close to home for me!
Today Mercury opposes Jupiter, giving people the urge to talk, talk, talk (Like I need an excuse!)and for the next couple of days the urge to divulge secrets is strong (but UNWISE!!!) Friday, Venus squares Neptune-don't expect to get much done. It's a lazy day (this is not good news for people like me who have Thursday and Friday to make up for two weeks of travel, and are looking at ten more days of insane scheduling, including CINCOCINCOCINCO and Mother's Day all rolled in one big enchilada!!!)
This at a time where (Saturday) Mars-the planet of directness and Git'er done moves into the sign of Pisces-the sign of whenever I feel like it, but not right now...until June 11th. If you feel a bit like a salmon trying to jump a waterfall for the next month, don't say I didn't warn you!!! I plan to make the best of it by taking naps whenever I can-this is a good placement for dreaming up the next step. When Mars moves into it's native sign of Aries June 11th you will have the urge to MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!
I'm off to visit the sandman...see you tomorrow!!!

Past My Bedtime
Mood:  chillin'
Now Playing: I Wanna Be Sedated-The Ramones
Topic: AS USUAL
There is a show on OPB on Tuesday nights called Independent Lens. I stayed up way too late watching a documentary on the Ramones. Independent Lens varies in length depending on what film they are showing. This one happened to be one of the longer ones, but then again you can't really condense a career like the Ramones-too much craziness and AMAZING longevity. I used one of my projects as an excuse to stay up, and basically turned the living room into an extension of my studio...and a big mess!!!
Last week at this time, I was sleeping on my sister's couch in Chicago. I had managed to clean the house before I left, so as to make it easier for me when I got home. When I did get home, the house was STILL CLEAN!!! The boy's did a great job! It has taken me a couple of days, but I have done a pretty good job of single-handedly creating clutter (all in the name of ART!!!) and while I have finished a couple of series of zodiac plaques, I have started even more! I suppose that a working mess is acceptable, but it is still A MESS!!! and now that I was able to get away from it all for a little while, I have come back to face the reality that I AM THE CULPRIT!!! OH NO!!!
What would the FLY Lady say?

8th Grade Graduation
Mood:  special
Now Playing: When You Wish Upon A Star-Jimminy Cricket
Topic: Class of 2005
Back to reality Monday. I decided to volunteer for the 8th grade graduation decorations. You know, because I needed a project to keep me busy (like a hole in the head-but then, I'm kind of into the whole piercing thing...) I get to create a 10ft. Graduation 2005 banner!!! Oooooohhhhhh! There is a star they walk through and I have cleverly decided to make the banner shaped like the tail of a comet-BRILLIANT!!! I have about a month to pull it off-anybody got an extra refrigerator box and some duct tape layin' around? Oh the things that can be done with a string of Christmas lights and some fishing line!!

I'M LATE, I'M LATE...
Mood:  spacey
Now Playing: Go Ask Alice-Jefferson Airplane
Topic: O'Hare, I Swear!!!
HI-Kids, I made it back late last night. Just in time to get in bed and be bright and shiny for the people at Pedro's Menudo Mesa.
Yesterday, my day began at 5:30am Chicago time-off to O'Hare to miss my first flight (which I was issued a boarding pass for, but which had already left (early!)by the time I got to the gate!) After a series of inconveniences, I managed to have my itinerary completely redone by a customer service agent who still remembered the days when he was restricted to flying only Skywest flights. The weather was uncooperative and winds were high enough to shut down all but two of the runways at the busiest hub in the U.S. It was a day of delays for almost everyone due to air traffic control vs. Mother Nature.
I finally got out of O'Hare, bound for Springfield, Mo.-to Denver-to Eugene!!! Once I made it out of O'Hare the rest of my day was spent mostly in the air, and I got home around 11pm Eugene time. Elapsed time, somewhere around 17 hours to get back!!!
The Lunar eclipse was in the wee hours of this morning. The moon yesterday was what is called "void of course" It is when the moon is in between astrological signs and is a bad time to try to travel, or make important decisions. Boy, did I see it in action yesterday!!! Hindsight is 20/20!
As for my trip-it was very special, and despite the circumstances of my return, I had a wonderful time with my family-all of which you will be hearing about in the coming days, (weeks...months...+++)

The Birds
Mood:  special
Now Playing: Theme to Land of the Lost-Sid& Marty Krofft
Topic: Flying
I just spent the whole day on 3 seperate flights making it to Chicago. This is where I was told this story by a very special nephew.
The birds made a nest with sticks. Then there was a booger squirter. The people got squirted with the boogers. Then the people got stuck in the boogers and they got GROSS!!! Then there was ice and the people and the boogers got frozen. Then there were dinosaurs and they came to eat the frozen booger people. They were very happy because boogerpeoplesicles were their favorite treat. Then the superheroes came and saved the people from the boogerpeoplesicle loving dinosaurs. Then the superheroes punched the dinosaurs in the tummy. Then the dinosaur threw cookies at the superheroes and the superheroes brought a big birthday cake for the dinosaurs and they threw a party and everybody had a great time. Then it was bathtime and we read our story and went to bed.
This really isn't that much different from one of my regular entries, is it?

Mood:  vegas lucky
Now Playing: Learning to Fly-Pink Floyd
Topic: Skyward HO!!!
In my usual manner, I am pushing the boundries of sleep deprivation. It's hard to get my rest when there is so much excitement about getting to see my family. I have prepared as much as possible, now it's time to go to bed. I am counting on someone not showing up for the 5:55am Denver flight in order to get a seat (Please-Stand-by!!) Wish me luck-and if I don't get on before then-Talk to y'all Saturday. I'm sure that I will have stories!!!

The Sound of Color
Mood:  lyrical
Now Playing: Colors-(spoken word)-Ken Nordine
Topic: Synesthesia
This morning on NPR, I heard a story that intrigued me. There is this condition called "synesthesia" where people hear colors, or a color is triggered by cerstain numbers or sounds. The phenomena is rare. The woman that they covered in the story is named Laura Rosser, and she plays the piano. When she composes, she basically paints with music (in her mind). She related a story of painting her bedroom periwinkle and putting yellow sheets on her bed. While other people thought it looked fine, something didn't feel right to her. She played the colors on her piano and figured out that it was a "tri-tone" The notes that represented the two colors, when played together were just enough of a degree apart that they create a certain dischord. In medieval times the particular tritone of these colors was known as the "Devil's tritone"!!! No wonder she was bothered!! (for the full, and fascinating story go to www.npr.org she is covered on today's morning edition.)
In Synesthetes, one stimulus crosses the boundries and touches off reactions in several parts of the brain. I imagine it is similar to the way that smell and taste influence one onother. I am intrigued. This is a function of expanded consciousness. The brain is wired to fire on more than the usual circuits. I wonder what it takes to develop this kind of awareness. I know that there are different types. I wonder how many of us have this in different ways-AND DON"T EVEN KNOW! I wonder how many questions there are? I wonder what my mandalas would sound like!
It is said that creation began with sound. Whether "the BIG BANG" or with God's voice "Let there be light!" ~OM~

Kinda Phishy
Mood:  spacey
Now Playing: Least Complicated-Indigo Girls
Topic: Dreamy
I had this dream the other night that I was at an arena that was built around a large outdoor ice skating rink. At one end of the ice, which was surrounded by snowbanks, was a stage. The three other sides had large bleachers. The band Phish was playing (I have been to see Phish before-there are other bands I would rather see-funny that they were the ones I put there!) Anyway-there was no one ice skating! I decided that I needed to go home and get my skates. I did this funny little barefooted skipping down a long set of stairs and ran into a security guard. I asked him if I could get back in after I came back with my skates. HE SAID NO!! I went down the hall and got permission from two other guards who said not to worry.
I got home and picked up my skates, and realized that I was being followed by the first guard who was not going to let me back in. Well, this was my house, and I knew my way around, so I decided that I would elude him and get back to the show. I started to sneak out and the house started to have all of these twists and turns, then kind of became a construction zone, then sort of woods, and mud and briar patches!!! I heard the guard (then there were more-) so I hid in a Hobbitty type hole and watched them run by. I got out, and went back to the show with my skates, but it was almost over. I never did get to skate!!
This was vivid enough to remember large portions of it, and fun/odd enough to want to remember. Here comes the odd part. I was at the Loco Cabesa today, and one of my co-workers says that she has been having really vivid dreams. She began to relate a dream that was almost exactly like the part after I got my skates and started running. Hers was a brick road that turned to mud and into a strange prehistoric type forest where she was hiding form a policeman/security guard type person because she was "tresspassing". She told me her dream and I stood there with my mouth open in disbelief. I know that this means that we were both tapping into the same night lesson (fish are indicative of "schools of learning" in night instruction) I'm sure we are not the only two who experienced it. What have they been showing YOU???

The Life Aquatic
Mood:  silly
Now Playing: Octopus' Garden-The Beatles
Topic: Scuba Steve
Once upon a time, back in the day, I wanted to be an "ichthiologist". Actually, as far back as I can remember, I was fascinated by fish. I was a huge Jacques Cousteau fan. In first grade I had amassed enough knowledge of fish to make everybody believe that I was going to head off to Woods Hole or Scripps ASAP!
In high school, I had a Biology teacher named (I AM NOT KIDDING-) Mr. Schooler. In the summer each year, he led an American Field Sciences trip to Andros Islands in the Bahamas. There were amazing stories of sleeping on the beach and scuba diving in the reefs 3 or 4 times a day for two weeks. Preparation included scuba diving lessons taught in the swimming pool at the Y or something like that. Not a whole lot of open water in Columbus, Ohio-especially in the winter when the lessons were taken.
I was reading one of Jacques' books (I feel like I was close enough to call him that) One about sharks, and had it on my desk in biology class one day. Mr. Schooler said to me "You like Jacques Cousteau?" (uh-yeah!) and he pulled this weathered wooden box and a letter out of the bottom of one of his many filing cabinets and placed it in front of me. I looked at the letter. It was written by JACQUES COUSTEAU!!! Seems that on one of the field science trips, the crew of the Calypso were on the island exploring these "blue holes" there. They
got to meet him and the box contained CORE SAMPLES taken on some exotic expedition. OMG!!!
I was completely amazed-and guess who was my FAVORITE teacher of all time.
With all of this enthusiasm for the ocean, and the life within it one might think "why aren't you a scientist today?" (I did have the knack for it!)
Well, it seems that when you actually get down to it I was way better at drawing pretty fish, than figuring out the chemical constitution of different samples of swamp water. So much for a career on the Calypso!
I just saw the quirky little offering from Bill Murray, (and I'm guessing the writers, or producers of the equally subtle little nuthouse-The Royal Tennenbaums)-The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. What can I say-it's almost as nutty as I am. Not everybody gets it, but for those who do,...Let's just say-You need help.
